Anchor Stockbrokers scores an impressive performance in the 2023 FM Ranking the Analysts survey

The annual Financial Mail (FM): Ranking the Analysts 2023 survey winners were announced during a live virtual ceremony held on 23 May and published in a FM special report on 25 May. The survey ranks analysts and firms across 40 research categories, and this year Anchor subsidiary Anchor Stockbrokers recorded an impressive performance across several categories.

Anchor Stockbrokers received FM ratings in the following categories:

Overall, BEE firm winner. Anchor Stockbrokers was the number-one BEE firm (out of 12 BEE firms). To qualify, firms must be more than 50% black-owned, have at least a level-2 BEE ranking, and their top-line revenue should be less than R100mn.

Number one in Real Estate: Francois du Toit, Yesh Pillay, Lwando Ngubentombi, and Craig Smith.

Number one in Quantitative Analysis: Josiah Rudolph

Number two in Risk Management: Josiah Rudolph

Number three in Hotels, Travel, and Leisure: Sven Thordsen and Craig Smith

Number four in Innovative Research: Josiah Rudolph

Number five in Investment Companies: Harry Botha and Francois du Toit

Number five in Insurance: Francois du Toit

Number six in Banks: Harry Botha and Sven Thordsen

Anchor Stockbrokers also received votes in the Corporate Access and Equity Sales categories.

The survey, collected and analysed by research firm Intellidex, is conducted through a confidential online questionnaire sent to local (SA) institutional clients of investment research and stockbroker firms. This year, 30 firms submitted lists, an increase from 27 firms in 2022. The questionnaires were completed by 50 institutional respondents, vs 35 last year. These respondents included asset managers, life insurance companies, some wealth managers and hedge funds, with the FM attempting to include all the largest fund managers by assets.

For each sector, the respondents were asked to rank the five best firms and, separately, the five best analysts based on the following criteria:

  • the quality of written fundamental research in terms of content and value;
  • the accuracy of forecasts and buy/sell recommendations;
  • useful ideas;
  • effective communication (both written and verbal); and
  • consistency over the past 12 months.

The rankings above are a great success story. Anchor Stockbrokers is competing with prominent local and global banks in the FM rating process, and these impressive results relatively early on (Anchor Stockbrokers has only existed for seven years) are beyond our wildest expectations and demonstrate the trust we have gained from our institutional clients.
