Warning:

This is an example of an ongoing scam that has been circulating, where fraudsters impersonate Anchor Capital employees and use fake email domains to deceive individuals. While this specific version of the scam involves false job offers and investment opportunities, it can come in many different forms and approaches. Scammers may use various tactics, such as promising high returns on investments or offering fake roles within the company, all with the goal of tricking individuals into sharing personal information or sending money. Always be cautious when receiving unsolicited communications, and remember that Anchor Capital will never ask for upfront payments or request sensitive details through email.

The Scam:

This scam is an elaborate attempt to impersonate Seleho, an employee of Anchor Capital, and deceive individuals into believing they are dealing with a legitimate representative of the company. Here are the key components of the scam:
  1. Fake Email Domain: The scammer uses an email address from a domain similar to Anchor Capital’s official one, anchor-trade.com, attempting to appear legitimate. The real company email domain is anchorcapital.co.za.
  2. False Investment Opportunity: The scammer offers an investment opportunity, claiming that Anchor Capital is involved in a partnership with a renewable energy company. They promise a high-paying role as a “Resident Liaison Executive” and suggest that the victim help find parties to handle loans worth billions of dollars.
  3. Fake Job and Loan Offer: The email suggests a part-time position with Anchor Capital where the person is supposed to find individuals or groups capable of handling large loans. They offer a competitive salary, including a percentage of investment funds as commission, which is meant to lure the victim into engaging with the scam.
  4. Requests for Payment: Eventually, the scammer encourages the victim to deposit a small amount (such as $5) to “prove” the legitimacy of the platform, which is an attempt to get the victim to send money.
  5. Urgency and Pressure: The scammer uses urgent language, promising quick action and a high return on investment. They also mention that the victim’s money will be “safe” and can be withdrawn at any time, which is part of the manipulation to build trust.
  6. Impersonation of Real Employees: The scammer impersonates a legitimate employee (Seleho Tsatsi) of Anchor Capital, using a similar email address and even a phone number, to make the communication seem credible.
