The 2026 Financial Mail (FM) Top Analyst Awards, held on 24 June, was hosted by the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) in collaboration with Krutham and media partner FM. The awards once again recognised the depth and quality of South Africa’s (SA) institutional research landscape.
The FM survey, independently collected and analysed by Krutham, has been the country’s leading benchmark for institutional stockbrokers and investment researchers since 1974. The rankings are determined by the buy-side, with asset managers and institutional investors assessing the quality, accuracy and usefulness of sell-side research.
This year, Anchor Stockbrokers (ASB), an affiliate of Anchor Capital, recorded an impressive performance across multiple categories, highlighting the strength and breadth of its research capability.
ASB was named the Overall Top Black Broker category winner, recognising the firm’s ongoing commitment to transformation and broader participation within SA’s financial services industry. This achievement reflects the values that sit alongside ASB’s core focus: delivering independent, high-quality research and insights to its clients.
ASB achieved six first-place finishes across an impressive range of categories, including Luxury Goods, Beverages & Tobacco, Quantitative Research, Investment Companies, Property, and Insurance. These six categories span equities research, quant capability, and specialist sector coverage.
The team also secured strong second-place rankings in Innovative Research, Banks, General Financials, Computing & Electronics, and Risk Management, underscoring the depth and consistency of its research bench across both core and niche disciplines.
Crowning the team’s performance, industry stalwart Rey Wium was honoured with the newly introduced Lifetime Achiever Award, the highest individual accolade at the Awards. With more than three decades in the market, 34 category wins and five second-place finishes to his name (in the last 12 years alone), Rey’s recognition reflects not just a single year of outstanding work but a career built on curiosity, disciplined research, and an unwavering client-first approach to research.
Reflecting on his career, Rey’s advice to younger analysts highlighted the importance of maintaining perspective, keeping the bigger picture in mind and avoiding herd behaviour – principles that remain central to ASB’s broader investment research philosophy.

These rankings are a powerful reflection of the calibre, expertise, and consistency of the ASB research team. Across banks, property, consumer sectors, quantitative analysis, and risk, our analysts continue to be recognised by the very people who rely on their insights most: SA’s leading asset managers and institutional investors, who determine these rankings through their own votes.
The rankings above are a testament to our unwavering commitment to excellence. ASB, in its relatively short existence of ten years, competes with prominent local and global banks in the FM rating process. This achievement is a testament to the trust built with institutional clients and the commitment of the team behind the research.
We want to extend our sincere congratulations to every member of the ASB research team and a special note of recognition to Rey Wium for capping an extraordinary 30-year career with this Lifetime Achiever Award.
