The Navigator provides our clients with insight into Anchor’s thoughts on various asset classes and our near-term market outlook.
With investing, the long-term path may be upward, but the journey is seldom a straight line. Financial markets have once again reminded investors of this, with extreme volatility, a major shock to global oil supplies and growing concerns about the availability and price of diesel. These developments have contributed to a sharp rise in bond yields, while equity markets continue to be supported by optimism around artificial intelligence (AI). At the same time, the gold price and the rand have surrendered some of the gains that have characterised much of this year.
Through all of this, we retain a sense of calm. Uncertainty is a permanent feature of financial markets, not an exception. There is always a potential storm cloud on the horizon, but volatility is an inherent part of investing rather than a reason to abandon a long-term investment strategy. Markets will inevitably experience periods of uncertainty, but history demonstrates that investors who remain invested through these periods are generally better positioned to capture long-term growth in financial markets. Time in the market, rather than attempts to time the market, remains one of the strongest determinants of long-term investment success.
Diversification across asset classes is an equally important part of navigating this journey. Exposure across asset classes can help portfolios remain more resilient when individual markets come under pressure. We have long viewed alternative assets, including hedge funds, protected equity structured products, physical property, etc., as important components of a well-diversified portfolio. These investments offer more differentiated return drivers and, in some cases, defensive characteristics that can help improve portfolio resilience and enhance risk-adjusted returns during volatile periods.
Alternatives remain a new and relatively underutilised asset class for most South African (SA) investors, despite representing a meaningful allocation in many international institutional and family office portfolios. As the global interest-rate cycle progresses and rates move lower, we believe the relative attractiveness of selected alternative investments is likely to increase further as investors seek differentiated sources of return and portfolio protection.
At Anchor Capital, we remain committed to building diversified portfolios that balance opportunity with resilience. Our investment philosophy continues to emphasise disciplined asset allocation, broad diversification and maintaining a long-term perspective through changing market conditions. Looking ahead, we believe the environment remains supportive of a measured pro-risk positioning, particularly if inflation continues to moderate, interest rates gradually decline, and global earnings growth remains constructive.
We also continue to advocate that a healthy portion of SA investment portfolios should be allocated offshore to leverage diverse opportunities and return profiles while mitigating SA-specific risk. The current rand/US dollar exchange rate presents a reasonable opportunity to externalise a portion of your portfolio. International markets continue to offer a broader universe of investment opportunities, greater sector diversification and access to structural growth themes that are less readily available locally. For SA investors, global diversification remains as much about improving portfolio quality and reducing concentration risk as it is about currency exposure.
The key to successfully managing your wealth is understanding the changes to the world in which we live and adjusting (when necessary) your investment portfolios accordingly. As a boutique asset manager, we can more readily navigate these twists and turns of global developments. Our team of experienced investment professionals is ideally suited to understanding and reacting to a rapidly changing environment as we pursue exceptional investment outcomes for our clients.
